Re: Re: X10 LD11 mains to low voltage conversion....does it save power?

Actually no, when I was researching it about 5 years ago, the general
conse=
nsus is that 12V are a little more efficient (although it does depend on
wh=
ether you have electronic transformers, the correct rating, etc). I used
Os=
ram individual electronic 12V transformers.

You can get some more energy-efficient (& more expensive of course)
version=
s of halogen bulbs (see http://greenoldhouse.wordpress.com/2008/01/21/impro=
ved-efficiency-halogen-lamps-continued/). For 12V a 35W is supposed to
give=
the same light as a 50W (though the 240V versions the saving isn't so grea=
t).

The future definitely seems to be LED though... (I think most are 240V
repl=
acements, which seems a bit weird to me given that 12V must be closer to
wh=
at a string of LEDs want)

Hi Darren

I would have thought that in basic terms a Watt is a Watt, if you reduce
th=
e voltage you must draw more current so the power consumed is the same.
Tha=
t is assuming a 50 Watt Halogen means exactly that.

You could look to change to use some of the new super bright LED lamps
(bot=
h mains and 12 volt versions can now be obtained at more reasonable
price).=
I have tried a couple of different types from Brightlightz.co.uk, the SMD =
units seem to be brighter, a 4 Watt unit being very close to the same as a
=
50 Watt Halogen and reducing power consumption by 90%. These lamps are
arou=
nd =C2=A310 and there are dimmable models. The light is not quite as good
a=
s Halogen but they are getting much better.

The only issue I have had is that the mains versions do seem to introduce
s=
ome noise so if your X10 can be a little flakey they can make things
worse.=
