VPN Problems help

I am newbie to the world of VPN so forgive me.
I have a machine that I'm using to VPN into a remote network.

My problem is as soon as the vpn connects I loose access to my access to
my
local lan. The use different ip ranges etc.
I know that's the way vpn works it forwards all ip traffic to the remote
lan.
BUT this is a pain as I want to be able to access the vpn machine from a
station in my
lan so I can use synergy to share my keyboard and mouse.

Does anyone know how I can do this? Is it something todo with routing
tables?
