Thanks Phil (and Marc) - that's clever!

I once saw a length of cable that had been joined together with a plug and
socket.  The only problem was the plug and socket were on the wrong ends of
the cable!

I thought that at first too, and then realised that if the control gear
syncs the AC waveform with the mains, then it's easy to shut down instantly
if that waveform disappears (ie the plug is unplugged).
