We had a similar issue. The standing instruction now is as follows.
"Update Automatic Links at Open should be set OFF. This is a
"Word=20
level" setting =96 that is, the setting persists across Word sessions
-=20
so once you've set it then it should stay set.=20
=B7	Select Tools/Options
=B7	Click on the General tab.
=B7	Ensure that Update Automatic Links at Open is NOT ticked. (If=20
it IS ticked, click on the tick to remove it.)
=B7	Click the OK button"

If it is ticked then Word does womble off for ages, even if nothing=20
needs to be done.=20
