One of the killers for UPS batteries is temperature.

Most UPS batteries have a service lifetime of ~3 years if kept below
25c, run them at 30c, and you'll be looking at 1.5-2 years of life.

As for recommendations, we're starting to standardise on Eaton UPS here
at work, from 3kVA all the way up to 200kVA, all on-line rather than
line-interactive.
