I'd also give the following a shot -
CCleaner - cleans out lots of dross files and compacts the registry
Malwarebytes - good anti-malware scanner.
JKDfrag - much better defragging than the Windows standard version.

Then I'd uninstall any stuff you haven't used in the last six months.
If you have McAfee/Norton installed remove them and install something
lighter.
And, as Ian mentioned, install more memory, it's pretty cheap and 1GB
really
is the minimum these days.
