NAS built by "some bloke" with spare drives and a mini-itx board

It appears that you can use a CF card with FreeNAS
(http://www.freenas.org/index.php?option=com_openwiki&Itemid=30&id=sug:en&s=card)
but wouldn't you lose one of your IDE channels?
FreeNAS can also run from a floppy or USB key drive memory stick thing.
