cpc/farnell/rs/maplin/etc will have the bits.

Try searching for "9 way D [plug/socket] solder bucket" to find
the bare
connectors, and "9 way D shell" for the housing.

Stranded cat5 would work ok (you rarely need to connect all 9 pins),
just be careful about choosing the pairs, otherwise some sort of 9 core
overall screened cable is probably what you want for standard serial
comms (it's sometimes easier to find 8 or 10 core cable though).

There are a few variations on standard cable pinouts, so you might find
you can get one ready made up (cpc have loads).
