Some software firewalls alert you to applications trying to make out going
connections and gives you the option stop them.

A hardware firewall can stop outgoing traffic, but you've got to know what
you're trying to stop e.g. which ports, which destination addresses etc.
(thinking of blocking some of the ad networks at mine)

For outgoing connections I think it's all a bit moot, as by the time you're
trying to block outgoing connections your security has already been
breached.

I suspect NAT is sufficient for most people, and god knows what security
issues upnp opens up.
