I followed Tracey's tip/recommendation last year, and boxed my Sonance
speakers in 18mm plasterboard/gripfill box, measured to the spec in the
install guide http://tinyurl.com/2flus4

"To achieve the ultimate performance from the CR series speakers, a
section
of the ceiling bay can be sectioned off to form a back box. Building this
enclosure will create a dramatic improvement in the quality of bass
response
and power handling."

If you do decide to use a box (dependent of type of speakers, and access),
try to make sure the dimensions are not divisible by each other, eg don't
make a 2' x 1' x 0.5' box, and (as previously said) use lots of rockwool
inside and around the box.
