RE: Stair Lighting

That's exactly what I did, except I had access to the stair before they
wen=
t
in, so all the channelling was done on the side of the stairs that's now
screwed to the wall. I had a 22mm hole, with a channel routed out to the
underside of the stairs, which is where all the gubbins are contained. I'm
not sure how bright 1 LED would be; the 3 LED versions are quite subtle,
bu=
t
useable (i.e. you can see the tread in the dark); not sure whether this
would be the case for the single lights?

Hmm - what about these ?

Curious, what sort of hole is needed for these ? If they are this small,=20
wondering if I can put them on the inner sides of the stairs - in the wood=
=20
? By drilling a hole big enough, and then digging out a channel in the=20
wood for the wire - then some wood filler before we re-gloss.

Inner sides which are perpendicular to the front edge of the steps...

Or does this sound a big mad !

Not really, in fact the ones I got from B&Q aren't on that site, so
maybe
they're manufactured by Ring instead (the other brand that B&Q
sells).=20
they
do sell the lights you linked to, but IMHO they're not the best looking,
have average build quality and I couldn't really see why I'd want them to
change colour randomly.

Anyway, after more searching, these are the ones I used (1 per tread):

I am sure they are the same fitting (the micromark led) but they are
available in a range of colours not just blue white. My supplier had a
display board with all the colours, sizes and shapes I think it was six
lines of colours by six or more different sizes and shapes.

They're what I used - I can't find them on www.diy.com <http://www.diy.com
<http://www.diy.com>=20
<http://www.diy.com <http://www.diy.com> >=20

, but they were =A350 per pack of 10 (the distribution box only has 10
connectors). The each about the size of an old 10p, flush-mounted to the
side of the stairs (as opposed to the wall above) and have 3 bluey/white
LEDs within.

As you say, I hope the 30,000hrs rated life is true, as replacing then=20
once
are fitted is a fiddle (but not impossible).

Gareth

It depends what you want, I have done a couple of jobs recently with a=20
wall
recessed light which has an asymmetric back so it throws the light across
the step. They are very nice, very expensive and a real b****** to fit as
they have an integral transformer which has to be recessed into the wall.
These actually light the steps.

Another option would be tread lights where the lights are actually in an
aluminium channel along the front of the step, These are used a lot in
hotels, restaurant and so on and have a fairly commercial/industrial look.=
=20

I
think they use xenon lights.

For a home feature you might like to think about the micromark led=20
fittings,
they have them in a range of sizes from about the size of a euro coin on=20
up
and in either round or an eye shape (I didn't see any square/rectangular=20
but
they may well do those as well). Off the top of my head you could run=20
about
18 of the smaller fittings off a single transformer. The smaller ones are
really just for effect as they don't really through enough light to be of
much use. I was on holiday in Portugal recently and in a restaurant they=20
had
the smallest ones embedded in a dark glossy stone floor. Very effective=20
but
not sure about maintenance.

Chaps

We planning on doing some major re-decorating for our hall down and up,=20
and all the way up the stairs. And I'm thinking that some stair lighting=20
might be funky. Has nayone got any galleries of pictures of design ideas=20
for this ?

Im thinking of a pressure mat on the first and last steps so comfort can=20
kick them on (ie mebe some led lighting?)

Open for ideas....
