Have you looked at his from Quasar ?

If USB is hard requirement then you look at marrying the above up with
something like http://www.dontronics.com/giga.html#io24
assuming you're
handy with a soldering iron (or know a man who can).

It's something I was looking at a while back...but still haven't gotten
to yet.
(As usual, too many ideas, not enough time)
