Briefly the benefits of VoIP over traditional PABX are
* reduced infrastructure costs (1 network instead of 2, data and
voice cabling)
* reduced desk infrastructure as PC’s, laptops and other
network devices can hang off the back of certain phones
* no additional call costs for dialing interoffice e.g. VPN (BT
Featurnet)
Some of the projects I have worked on have kept the legacy TDM PABX to
handle the high volumes of calls site to site and some have ditched TDM
completely. It really depends on whether it is a Greenfield site or an
existing site upgrading. Cisco stuff is not cheap and we have seen
100’
s if not thousands of bugs over the last 12 - 18 months.
Me personally I would stick to TDM for at least another 5 - 6 years
until more than 50% of new or existing sales are VoIP.

Here is one I have been wondering about but not yet researched - just
general interest not a current project or anything:
I want to understand the benefits of VoIP over a traditional PABX in a
typical business environment (you know - generally typical!) The
conditions are that the only connection to the outside world is via a
traditional PSTN connection of some sort and the cabling infrastructure
exists to support required connectivity for a traditional PABX should
that be the solution.
Why would I want VoIP in preference to a modern digital PABX?
