Barcode reader help please

I've just bought a barcode scanner from laser.com

A Welch Allyn Scanteam 3400 CCD.

It powers up, can scan the programming barcodes from the zygo website 
but as soon as I scan the test barcode, the scanner locks up and 
doesn't respond. 

If I disconnect the power and reconnect the scanner comes back to 
life until I scan something (the program codes are still fine.)

If I disconnect the serial cable then reset the scanner It will 
acknowledge the scans by beeping.

Can anyone shed any light on this please.

I'm using Windows 2k.
