The mains voltage in the UK is the same as in Western Europe. The plug is, as you say, different. However, most of the UK distributors sell the versions with continental plugs.

If you are at 110v, then you would be better off importing from the US. While the duty will be higher, the costs will be much lower to start with, so you're paying duty on a much lower number.

Note that this is NOT a dig at the UK / EU resellers - the problem of high costs in Europe is primarily down to X-10 Europe, not price-gouging on the part of the reseller.

UK is in the EU. The customs organisation is the European Union. This is different from the Eurozone, which is the (smaller) set of countries that have adopted the Euro as their national currency.
