I found out as soon as I got the printer home that the print heads had a lifetime of 2 years (or 12,000/24,000 pages for black/colour respectively) ... mine is now two years old and from the last page count I've hit about 16,000 pages. It is a damn good printer though and I have got used to it ... the print quality on "ordinary" paper is superb - I swapped over to using my Epson printer temporarily yesterday and the print quality using the same paper is pants! (Yes .... I did make sure it was set to the right paper type too!)

In fact I printed the same document on both the HP and the Epson yesterday to check as the difference was so marked and even my missus commented on how bad the Epson was in comparison - plus it was about a third of the speed too!

It’s a shame about the faults in this printer as when it works it is outstanding. I’m sure it is hidden in the small print somewhere, but the one thing that I didn’t realise at the time of buying is that the print heads have a life of 25,000 pages IIRC or one year. If used in a home environment it seems unlikely that the 2,000 page a month limit will ever likely be reached. I had a black print head go south after around 3,000 pages just before Christmas – just outside the warranty period!

That said, when the print heads behave themselves you do get bucketloads of ink in the replacement cartridges compared with the all-in-one style of replacement, and it is pretty fast as inkjets go. I just hope that I don’t suffer any of the “built in” failure modes, as I really don’t fancy shelling out for a printer that I don’t actually use that often.

I replaced my defunct HP5200C scanner last month (self repair failed) with a 5400C. It is faster, higher resolution, the software is MUCH better, and it was cheaper. I seem to be spending most of my time nowadays using the two as a colour copier!

Tim.

Given that when I finally got someone from HP to talk to me yesterday and went through the fault with them they came nowhere close to giving me a solution then I don't hold out too much hope of getting any help from them in any other way. Basically the unit is out of warranty (which I do completely understand) and so they aren't interested in helping (which I don't).

Given the information from Dr John and Luc I've effected what I consider a "temporary" repair and using the old cartridge I've had it do a self test sucessfully and a couple of prints ... all I now need to do is take back the two full carts and try to exchange them as faulty as they have had their "chips" written to and now log to the printer as empty!

I have also had an offer of help from Mike Huggins (of Lets Automate) who has given me a phone number for someone that works for him who will try to locate me a replacement part...

I tried when mine went up the spout, and got no where, despite the fact I am a reseller of HP !!

I only got the 2200 after I received a assurance that the design fault in the 2000C had been corrected, fortunately for me I did not have many spare cart's

Have you tried having a go at HP?
