RE: Broadband in the sticks?

move? :-)

Not as bad as you might think. Speedwise, IMO, good enough for browsing,
email etc.
The connect time is virtually instantaneous and you're probably going to be
limited by other parts of the network anyway.
MY 1meg cable modem link doesn't seem appreciably faster than when it was
512, which wasn't hugely better than the ISDN link I had before that.
For gaming, streaming video, file downloads etc, of course, it sh*ts all
over ISDN - depends on what you want it for.

There are companies offering essentially always on ISDN for a fixed monthly
price that may be an acceptable solution....

Usually with this, the return path (from you to sat operator) is usually a
normal modem, so it may not offer the speed you require - depends on what
direction you want it in.
having a higher speed return path involves an xmitter at your house and is
a
lot more expensive than the sat/phone method.

dunno. doubt it. Cost of plumbing in line would be horrendous!

NTL were trialling a fixed wireless system about 6/12 months ago. Dunno
what's happened to it, if it's being rolled out/abandoned/whatever......

Again, I say "move" :D
