I think (hope) most people are just joking about the more serious excuses.
Amanda (SWMBO) knows when I tell her things like "I'm testing it" or "its on
loan" that I have just bought it.

As for not having money for food, some people on this list, no names
mentioned, buy 3grand microwaves so we they must have money for food or else
what would they put in the microwave ;-) It's all about priorities and I'm
sure everyone is on this list because they have a few bob spare.

What sort of wife doesn't mind her man having a hobby, and indulging it?
How many of us are going out and buying toys, when there's no money for
food?
