"From 28 April 2001, all special rate numbers that do not begin 08
will stop
working. These numbers, often used by helplines and organisations that do
business or want to be contacted over the telephone, will all start 08.
0500, 0800 and 0808 numbers are free and won't be changing. 0845 numbers
(which were 0345 and 0645) are charged at 'up to local rate' and 0870
(which
were 0374, 0541 and 0990) numbers are charged at 'up to national rate'.
Click on 084 or 087 below to see how the numbers change.

The new numbers have been allocated as follows:

080 Freephone - 0800, 0808
081 Spare capacity for future expansion
082 Schools Internet - 0820
083 Spare capacity for future expansion
084 Up to local rate - 0845
085 Spare capacity for future expansion
086 Spare capacity for future expansion
087 Up to national rate - 0870
088 Spare capacity for future expansion
089 Spare capacity for future expansion
