I want to automate a porch light but can't easily replace the switch
(connected via a 3 gang switch) or tap into the wiring to fit an
inline module.

Consequently I wondered about stripping the electronics out of an
appliance module (either inline or 3 pin plug type) and hiding them
inside the porch lamp itself. So the question is, has anyone taken a
module apart already and can tell me what sort of size I can reduce
the essential bits too? It needs to be an appliance module since
ideally I want to use a low energy bulb.

Alternatively, can anyone suggest a suitable porch light that will
turn itself on at dusk, and switch off automatically after a set
number of hours? The only ones I've come across so far have PIRs
built in too.

Cheers, Ray Barnett
