Thanks for all the advice guys, he has agreed to go with the external usb

I suggested, he has windows ME so shouldn't be a problem. My only concern
now is that he has an ABIT motherboard with VIA chipset and I know there
are
problems with the USB on these, but I also know there are plenty of fixes
out there so he should be OK. If he really has problems he can always put
in
a new USB controller, they are not too expensive and would be useful for
connecting other devices too.
