The big problem, as I see it, is that (probably, as usual) 90% of the
people with NTL or whatever boxes just come in switch the TV on and *at
best* use a SCART lead direct to the TV to view the source. The number
of people willing to pay the premium for a control system that can be
operated from a remote location is very limited and then you come down
to the old "is it worth bothering with due to limited demand"
scenario
for the companies involved. My guess is that it is simply not worth the
effort!

Add to that the fact that Pace etc. seem to be moving away from IrDA and
it becomes a totally unviable proposition from a business perspective.
Yes, the die-hards will find a way and there are limited applications
where it would be useful but they are few and far between.

The phone companies use IrDA and the PDA market seem to like it as well,
but again it is a limited market, I mean what can you actually achieve
with it that is of any great use to a majority of users? Bear in mind
that Bluetooth is just around the corner and that the G3 services which
demand a higher data rate than IrDA can cope with, AFAIK, so businesses
will likely switch to this for wireless comms between laptops, PDAs etc.
so again IrDA has little future use, IMO.

For the PC you can buy a blaster thingy that uses standard IR to
communicate with the outside world for about £60 from Concept Devices, a
far cheaper and easier to use solution for IR communication with a
desktop PC than IrDA!

Not necessarily - remember, integration of PC and entertainment systems
and/or
HA is a relatively new field and Xantech etc are largely coming from the
Hifi
world. Just because we all use PC's etc, doesn't mean the rest of the
world
is
au-fait with this sort of thing.
I was very surprised what - 18 months ago? when my local Linn retailer
could

barely use a PC - I thought Linn was crying out for some sort HA/PC
integration!

Many HiFi websites are barely a front page with contact details &
directions
to the
shop - and the manufacturers are not much better.

It is improving granted, but until there's a big push on the integration
side & cross-pollination
of the two cultures, don't expect much any time soon.....

Laptop manufacturers and moblie phone ppl seem to cope okay with IrDA,
so
there's no real reason
why Xantech et al can't do it!!!

Tony.
