PIPEX PULLS A FASTER ONE
AT last! Broadband's been given the much-needed boot up the backside,
thanks to the new era of DIY ADSL.
Pipex, one of the first UK companies to offer internet access in 1991, has
wrong-footed rivals by offering the cheapest ADSL (broadband on BT phone
lines) to date.
It's so cheap that Pipex will lose money over this.
It's subsidising the switch-on fee of £50, and charging just £29.32 a month
(or £24.95 ex-VAT for the self-employed), the first time a UK ISP has
offered ADSL for less than £30 a month.
It also takes ADSL into the same pricing arena as cable broadband, although
this is still only available to a small proportion of the country.
The only catch with Pipex's Xtreme Solo package (info at
www.solo.pipex.net) is you'll need to buy an ADSL modem, although you can
pick up one up on the net for around £80 (Fujitsu FDX310) or directly from
Pipex for around £100.
